Squad Descriptions
Level 1
This is the first level of Blue Wave’s competitive program,
designed for our youngest swimmers (6-8 year olds). Children
practice two times weekly for one hour and twenty minutes (1 hour
is devoted to in water and 20 minutes is devoted to dry-land
activities). In-water instruction is utilized. Swimmers are taught
balance and awareness with much attention on proper air exchange,
body alignment, and long easy strokes. Freestyle and backstroke are
mastered while fundamentals of breaststroke and butterfly are
introduced as well as starts. Focus is on quality of skills.
Instruction involves simple skill explanation, visual
demonstration, and in-water spotting of skills. Two practices
offered per week. Swim meets are offered to those that are skill
ready (legal in at least three strokes and can dive) with a relaxed
and fun approach (times are not emphasized at this age). Dryland
training is introduced.
This is the first level of our competitive
program. Swimmer must be able to complete the following:
- Swim 25 meters of freestyle with rotary
breathing and supportive kick
- Swim 25 meters of backstroke with alternating
arms and supportive kick
- Able to perform dolphin kick and breaststroke
kick
- Able to jump into water off
blocks.
Ultimately, the coach has final say
in group appointments
Level 2
This is the second level for Blue Wave’s youngest competitors
(7-9 year olds). Swimmers practice three times weekly for one hour
twenty minutes (1 hour is devoted to in water and 20 minutes is
devoted to dry-land activities). Both in-water and on deck coaching
are utilized to teach swimmers. TYPHOON 2 offers stroke and
technique development to the slightly more experienced swimmer. All
four strokes are taught in depth, as well as starts and turns. This
group is 90% teaching of skills, and 10% application of those
skills in a competitive environment. Swimmers are required to hold
onto instruction before moving onto the next skill. Instruction
involves simple explanation, visual demonstrations and in-water
spotting of skills. Three practices offered per week. Swim meets
are offered in a relaxed and fun approach (times are not emphasized
